Three years ago today
Three years ago today, my family and I left New York for North Carolina. We haven’t looked back, but I still miss New York bread.
Today, though, my wife and I had a seminal moment in our career as southerners. We went to WalMart, and bought wine, ammo, and a gun safe. My wife turned to me and said “You know that we are officially southern, now, right? And, yes, you can blog this.”
I love my wife.

[...] The Newbie Shooter is now officially southern. [...]
I don’t know.
Aren’t you officially Southern once you build your own smoke house out back?
Hmm, trying to figure out whether I’m officially Southern myself or not. On the one hand, my three year anniversary is right around the corner. On the other, I got my gun safe at Costco, my wine at Trader Joe’s, and my ammo from … well … just about anywhere but Wal-Mart. And back on the original hand, I moved here not from the North but from Southern California, which ain’t the South but is nevertheless well south of the Triad.
I don’t know, Cemetery…isn’t that the 5-year anniversary?
I hear you re ammo, Xrlq. I read that entry when originally published, and as I general rule I don’t buy ammo at Wal-Mart. It was an impulse buy. And Costco didn’t have the safe I wanted.
My ex-wife was from New Jersey. We use to joke she’d been down hers so long she was a naturalized southerner. We never did figure out at what defining point she stopped being a damn Yankee. Buying wine, ammo, and a gun safe work as well as other defining moment. Concrats.
Welcome, Y’all.
You know, you ain’t truly southern unless you’ve had grits and chitlins… Preferably in the same meal. With buttermilk.

ROFLMAO Well good on ya is all i can say
Just don’t let me catch you flying the stars and bars, rebel.
I usually lurk and just enjoy reading, but thought I’d toss in my 2 cents on this one…
I was born in Georgia and raised in Alabama. My Mother use to joke, “You poor thing – you’re double southern.”
Having married a soldier many moons ago and left the deep south for duty stations across the country, my very southern family swears I’ve lost my southern accent. Apparently out here in the Midwest where we currently reside, I haven’t lost much of it. I’m asked at least a few times a month where I’m from lol.
Anyhow, welcome to being a southerner…y’all are definitely in great company. Having been on the other side of the Mason-Dixon line for so long, I can say without reservation that some of the best folks in the country are southerners and I’m damn proud of where I come from. No matter where I live, those I consider to be “my people” are southern. I guess you can take the gal out of the south, but you can never take the south out of the gal
.
Hope you and your family have a great New Year!
You are well on your way having gone to Wal-Mart! If you really want to nail it, before you make your next trip there, just tell a few people that you are “,strong.fixin’ to go to Wal-Mart. You’ll also be purchasing a truck soon. So people know you are not a poseur, be sure to back it into all parking spaces.
Just trying to be helpful!
